Deck Repair in Fort Wayne

Rotting boards, wobbly railings, soft spots when you walk, if your deck has seen better days, we can bring it back or tell you honestly if replacement makes more sense.

Indiana is not kind to decks. Between the summer humidity, the freeze thaw cycles from November through March, and the occasional ice storm, a deck in Fort Wayne takes more abuse than one in most parts of the country. If yours is showing its age, you're not alone, and you don't necessarily need to tear the whole thing down and start over.

We do a lot of deck repairs around Allen County, and the truth is, most problems are fixable if you catch them before they spread. The trick is knowing what you're looking at and not just covering up symptoms.

Common Deck Problems in Fort Wayne

Rotting Deck Boards

This is the most visible issue, and it's usually the reason people call us. You notice a soft spot, poke it with a screwdriver, and the tool sinks right in. In Fort Wayne's climate, rot typically starts on the end grain of boards where they butt up against each other, or anywhere water sits instead of draining. South facing boards that get baked by afternoon sun and then soaked by rain tend to cycle through wet dry faster, which accelerates decay.

Replacing individual boards is straightforward, we match the existing lumber species and dimension, pull the damaged boards, and install new ones. If your deck is pressure treated pine and more than a few years old, the new boards will look different until they weather. We can stain everything to match, or you can let it weather naturally.

Structural Rot and Joist Damage

This is the one that scares people, and honestly, it should get your attention. When the joists underneath your decking start to rot, the deck's structural integrity is compromised. We see this most often where joists rest in joist hangers that have trapped debris and moisture, or where the ledger board connects to the house.

Joist repair usually involves sistering, bolting a new joist alongside the damaged one to restore strength. If the damage is too extensive, we'll replace the joist entirely, which means pulling up the decking above it. Either way, we address the drainage issue that caused the rot in the first place, or you'll be right back where you started in a few years.

⚠️ When Repair Isn't Enough

If more than 30-40% of your deck's framing shows rot or structural damage, a full rebuild usually makes more financial sense than piecemeal repairs. We'll tell you honestly which direction makes sense for your situation.

Failing Posts and Footings

Posts that are set directly in the ground, without a concrete footing and a post base, eventually rot at the soil line. This was common practice 20+ years ago, and plenty of Fort Wayne homes still have decks built this way. The post looks fine above ground, but at the base, it's soft and crumbling.

We repair this by jacking the deck temporarily, cutting the post above the damage, pouring a proper footing below the frost line (42 inches in Allen County), and installing a new post with a metal post base that keeps the wood off the concrete. The post base is a small detail that makes a huge difference in longevity.

Wobbly or Damaged Railings

Loose railings are a safety hazard, full stop. Building code requires railings on any deck surface more than 30 inches above grade, and those railings need to resist a 200 pound lateral load at the top. If your railing wobbles when you lean on it, the post connections have likely failed.

Most railing posts are attached to the outside of the rim joist with lag bolts. Over time, the holes elongate, the bolts loosen, and the posts start to rock. We fix this by either rebolting with larger hardware or, the better solution, installing through bolts with backing plates that distribute the load across a wider area.

Ledger Board Separation

The ledger board is the piece of lumber that attaches your deck to your house. It carries roughly half the deck's weight and all the lateral load. If it's pulling away from the house, water is getting behind it, or the flashing has failed, you have a serious problem that goes beyond the deck itself, water intrusion into your home's rim joist causes interior structural damage too.

Repairing a ledger board usually means removing the deck surface near the house, pulling the old ledger, addressing any rot in the house framing, installing proper flashing, and reattaching a new ledger with code compliant lag screws or through bolts.

Deck Inspection: What We Check

When we come out to look at your deck, we're not just glancing at the surface. Here's what a thorough deck inspection covers:

  1. Surface boards, Checking for rot, splitting, cupping, loose fasteners, and trip hazards
  2. Structural framing, Joists, beams, and blocking underneath, probing for soft spots with an awl
  3. Posts and footings, Checking post bases for rot, verifying footing adequacy
  4. Ledger connection, Inspecting the house to deck attachment, flashing, and any signs of water intrusion
  5. Railings and stairs, Testing lateral resistance, checking balusters spacing (no more than 4 inches per code), and stair stringer condition
  6. Hardware, Looking for corroded joist hangers, nails backing out, and missing connectors
  7. Drainage and grading, Making sure water drains away from the deck and doesn't pool underneath

Deck Staining and Sealing

After repair work, or as standalone maintenance, staining and sealing your deck protects the wood from UV damage and moisture penetration. In Fort Wayne's climate, an oil based semi transparent stain typically lasts 2-3 years on horizontal surfaces and 4-5 years on vertical surfaces like railings.

We prep the surface properly before any stain goes on, power washing alone isn't enough. We use a deck brightener to open the wood grain, let it dry completely, and then apply stain when the weather cooperates: above 50°F, no rain in the forecast for 48 hours, and not in direct blazing sun. Timing this around Fort Wayne's spring and fall weather windows takes a little patience.
