Your backyard deserves more than a cookie cutter deck. We design and build decks tailored to your home, your yard, and how you actually live.
There's a big difference between a deck that was slapped together over a weekend and one that was thoughtfully designed for a specific home. If you've lived in Fort Wayne long enough, you've probably seen both kinds, the wobbly platform behind a house on State Boulevard, and the gorgeous multi level deck in Aboite Township that makes you think, "I want something like that." We build the second kind.
A custom deck starts with your property, not a template. We look at your lot grading, the position of your house, where the sun hits in the afternoon, what views you want to frame, and how you plan to use the space. A family with small kids needs different things than empty nesters who want a quiet spot for morning coffee.
Here's what a custom design process actually involves:
If your yard has any slope at all, a multi level deck is usually the smartest way to use the space. We've built plenty of these in neighborhoods like Georgetown and Waynedale where lots tend to have gentle slopes toward the back. The upper level connects to your house at door height, and the lower level brings you closer to the yard, great for grilling, a fire pit area, or just creating separate zones for different activities.
Popular with ranch style homes (and Fort Wayne has no shortage of those), a wraparound deck gives you outdoor access from multiple rooms. We've built wraparounds that connect a kitchen door on one side to a master bedroom on the other, with built in benches and planter boxes along the railing.
Some Fort Wayne homes, especially split levels common in the Huntertown and Leo-Cedarville areas, have main living areas a full story above grade. An elevated deck with a proper staircase opens up that back door and turns dead space into usable outdoor living. These need beefier structural engineering, 6x6 posts, cross bracing, and footings that go below the 42 inch frost line required in northeast Indiana.
Above ground and in ground pools both benefit from a surrounding deck. We use composite materials almost exclusively for pool decks because they handle moisture and bare feet better than wood. The non slip surface options available in composite decking make them a practical choice around water.
Most deck projects in Fort Wayne and Allen County require a building permit. This includes any attached deck, any deck over 30 inches above grade, and any deck with a roof structure. We handle the permit application as part of every project, it's included in our scope of work, not an extra charge.
Indiana weather doesn't go easy on outdoor structures. Summers hit 90°F with humidity that makes everything feel sticky. Winters drop below zero, and the freeze thaw cycles between December and March are what really punish decks that weren't built right.
Every deck we build accounts for this climate:
From the first conversation to the final walkthrough, most custom deck projects take between three and six weeks. Here's the typical timeline:
Straight talk: a quality custom deck in Fort Wayne typically runs between $35 and $75 per square foot, depending on materials and complexity. A basic 12x16 pressure treated deck might come in around $8,000 to $10,000. A larger multi level composite deck with built in seating and lighting can reach $25,000 to $40,000 or more.
