What was mostly farmland and a handful of older homes along SR-3 has turned into one of Allen County's hottest growth corridors. Subdivisions like Cherry Hill, Wynde Pointe, and the neighborhoods off Huntertown Road have brought hundreds of new families to a town that not long ago had a population you could fit in a high school gymnasium.
That growth is exactly why deck building has taken off here. Most of the newer construction in Huntertown, the homes built from roughly 2010 onward, were delivered with a concrete slab patio or, in many cases, nothing at all behind the back door. Builders know that buyers make their decisions based on kitchens and bathrooms, not outdoor spaces. So you end up with a $350,000 home that opens to a bare yard.
Here's something the newer Huntertown homeowners discover pretty quickly: those builder grade concrete patios crack. Northeast Indiana's freeze thaw cycle is brutal on concrete, and the thin 4 inch slabs that production builders pour are the first things to show damage. Within three to five years, you're looking at cracks, heaving, and a patio that's not level anymore.
A well built deck avoids this problem entirely. Wood and composite decking is flexible enough to handle seasonal ground movement, and a properly footed deck sits on posts that go below the frost line, so while the surface soil is freezing and thawing, your deck stays put.
Huntertown lots tend to be generous compared to what you'll find inside Fort Wayne city limits. Quarter acre and third acre lots are common in the newer subdivisions, and the older properties along Lima Road and north toward Churubusco can run an acre or more. That gives you real flexibility in deck design.
We see a lot of Huntertown homeowners going bigger than they originally planned once they realize what's possible. A 400 square foot deck with a separate grilling area and stairs down to a fire pit, that's a realistic project out here, where you've got the yard space to support it. In a tighter Fort Wayne neighborhood, you'd be running up against setback requirements. In Huntertown, you're usually well within the limits.
Part of what draws families to Huntertown is that it still feels semi rural even though you're 15 minutes from everything Fort Wayne has to offer. Backyards back up to tree lines and farm fields. A deck here isn't just an outdoor room, it's a vantage point. Plenty of Huntertown decks look out over open land, and that changes how you design the space. Orientation toward a tree line or sunset view matters more here than in a typical suburban setting where you're mainly looking at your neighbor's fence.
Huntertown falls under Allen County's building jurisdiction for most residential construction. You'll need a building permit for any deck over 200 square feet or more than 30 inches above grade. The permit process through Allen County Planning is straightforward but does require a site plan showing your property lines and setbacks.
One thing to watch in Huntertown: some of the newer subdivisions have HOA covenants that go beyond what the county requires. We've seen HOAs in the Cherry Hill area that dictate deck materials (no pressure treated lumber visible from the street) and color palettes. If you're in an HOA, check your covenants before you get too deep into design. We're familiar with the common Huntertown HOA requirements and can help you work within them.
Deck pricing in Huntertown is comparable to greater Fort Wayne. A standard 300 square foot pressure treated deck runs $9,000-$15,000 installed. Composite builds for the same size range from $15,000-$24,000 depending on the decking brand and railing choices. Covered structures add $4,000-$10,000 depending on whether you're going with a simple pergola or a full roofed cover.
