Building a deck in northeast Indiana isn't quite the same as building one in, say, Georgia or Arizona. Here's what makes our area different.
The frost line matters. In Allen County, footings need to go at least 36 inches deep to get below the frost line. Skip that and you'll end up with a deck that heaves and shifts every spring. It's one of the first things a good local contractor will make sure is done right.
Moisture is constant. Fort Wayne averages around 38 inches of rain per year plus significant snowfall. That's a lot of water for your deck to deal with. Proper flashing where the ledger board meets your house, good drainage underneath, and appropriate joist spacing all matter more here than in drier climates.
Indiana building codes have specifics. The state follows the IRC with some local amendments. Allen County requires permits for most deck construction, and inspections cover everything from footing depth to railing height (36 inches minimum for residential, 42 inches if it's a commercial property). Your contractor should know these inside and out.
Wood selection isn't one size fits all. Indiana sourced pressure treated southern yellow pine is the workhorse of deck building around here, affordable, strong, and widely available from local lumber yards. Cedar holds up well too but needs more maintenance in our humidity. And if you're going composite, make sure the product is rated for freeze thaw cycling.
